Fantasy Landscapes of a Trompe l'Oeil House Fant

Fantasy Landscapes of a Trompe l\'Oeil House Fant
Decorative artists Myrella Moses and Eric Mondriaan have thrown caution to the wind in painting the interior of their one-of-a-kind fantasy house. Jennifer Convy, host of HGTV's Awesome Interiors, takes a tour of their "kitchen cave," "cloud-nine bedroom" and "underwater bathroom."

Everything in the kitchen cave has been painted in layers of color to create the warm, rosy glow of a cave at sunset. A layer of wall compound on walls, cabinets and even the floor provides a textured surface for layers of paint. The "dirt" floor is actually linoleum layered with wall compound, paint and several coats of varnish. A big oak table, the focal point of the kitchen, is heavily distressed, then stained and shellacked for an aged look. The cave effect around the dining table opens into a cloud-painted ceiling over the work area.

The grand entrance to the cloud-nine bedroom is a doorway of inexpensive Indian saris, which also frame the bed. The cloud-painted sky extends to all the walls in the room, giving the feeling of actually being in the clouds.

Entering the underwater bathroom, one moves from clouds to sea, with an indigo wash on the large expanse of bathroom wall leading to a skylight. Flat glass pebbles glued to the walls complete the bubbly underwater look.

The fantasy landscapes of this playful home show what a big part personality can play in decorating. This home is perfectly suited to its owners -- and yours should be perfectly suited to you. If you do your own decorating, take the time to make it a true reflection of yourself.
